Age–friendliness is a worldwide issue worth pursuing. The population today lives longer and healthier than in previous decades. Thus, the age structure of the population has changed, and the number of older people is increasing. In Finland, the age programme of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health promotes age-friendliness through six effectiveness objectives. This thesis focuses on two effectiveness objectives, which are age-friendly housing environments and the consolidation of voluntary activities. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the experiences of older people in rural areas. The aim of the thesis was to draw up proposals based on the information obtained to enable different actors to develop their age-friendly policies and practices. The objective commissioning organization to support active daily life of older people. Workshop events provided an opportunity for every older person to contribute and be heard in promoting age–friendliness in their own municipality. Based on the results, older people gain strength from close relatives, nature, hobbies and their home environment. Long distances and poor transport connections are concern when living in rural areas. The development of digitalization and digital illiteracy were also a concern. However, the main concern was the reduction of health and social services in rural areas, including the fear of the closure of health centers and the lack of home care services.
